Like the shipyard illustration seen in the first restoration page this engraving of Captain Raphael Semmes had a green tint. I removed the color through desaturation. After removing the gray shading behind his shoulders I tweaked the focus ever so slightly and then used blending to matte the image. I matched the website background color of very light blue. The lines separating him from the background appear crisp. This image was also resized to fit within the web page. As you can see in the first image I played with hand coloring but decided that in the original illustration the head looked far more realistic than the coat. Hand coloring seemed to emphasize that difference. In this particular case then the black and white image worked best. I used hand coloring on the next project with better results.
