This is one of the few known images of the CSS Alabama when it visited South Africa. The photo is badly damaged and despite my best efforts it remains a poor image. As you can see from the before image above there are numerous problems including fading, scratches, blurriness, and streaks.

I attempted to restore this image through manual adjustments to levels and curves. I used healing and clone tools to remove some spots and scratches. Like the shipyard image I had to create separate layers to work on individual areas of the image such as the area directly under the cannon. Some of the darkest areas were simply too black. Adjusting their levels separately revealed there was no additional detail. In those cases I left the image dark rather than a grainy gray. I also cropped this image to focus attention more on the two figures beside the cannon. On the whole the restored photo is more useful for providing information than the before version.
